I remember when I decided to join CrossFit. I just watched some documentary on Netflix that had to do with CrossFit and I thought, “I want to do that.” I have other friends that have their own reasons for joining CrossFit like Jay. He was an athlete and so naturally, he wanted something fun, functional and complex, and that’s why he chose CrossFit.
Another friend, Robbie, chose CrossFit because his wife introduced him to it and it’s also great for his body, heart and lungs.
Kirk chose CrossFit because people from all walks of life and different backgrounds come together to help each other accomplish goals in and out of the gym.
Amanda chose CrossFit because it keeps her sane. She calls the 60 minutes class a collective dying of people that are tired, stressed, upset, hurt and everything in between. It brings her peace.
Jose chose CrossFit because it doesn’t matter what level a person’s at, everyone can do it. Plus, what form of exercise allows an athlete to be able to run for a long time, lift weights, do gymnastics and power lit heavy things then CrossFit?
But one friend in particular, whose name is Adi, didn't even want to be in CrossFit. He had no desire to join because it wasn’t for him. He went to gyms and did his lifting, but he was bored. He had a friend who was a CrossFit coach and kept nagging him at their pickle ball games until finally he went to a class. His first class was really enjoyable. It’s funny because he says it was mostly the people that he adored. Later on, he ended up enjoying CrossFit because of the physical and mental challenge of the workouts.
Everybody has a story to tell whether it’s how they ended up joining one of the most challenging, craziest, rewarding forms of exercise, a.k.a. CrossFit and/or how they first came to believe in Jesus. For me, I became a Christian due to the fact that God is a loving Father and I didn’t grow up with one unless you want to count the three years of abuse from my step dad. If Jesus was the way to a wonderful dad, I’m in!
Acts 9:3-4 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”
In Acts, there’s a guy named Saul who’s going around persecuting Christians. He doesn’t want to have anything to do with “their” Jesus. He even got permission to arrest some of them. But it wasn’t until a strange event led him from hating Christians to becoming one. He’s kind of like Adi where he’s like, “No I’m good. I'm not interested.” But Saul’s event was not as happy as Adi’s first trip to the CrossFit Box. It was traumatic in the sense that he lost his sight, and heard Jesus speak to him from heaven; it wasn't even like Jesus was still on earth. When he got his sight back, his belief changed.
Christians and CrossFitters can both agree that no two origin stories are alike and there’s an unmatched love amongst the community that has one mind and one spirit. This is our testimony.
