There's No Such Thing as Motivation

Usually people hear the word eavesdropping and automatically assume a person is listening in to others' secret conversation yet it was this very act that pushed me to finish my WOD (workout of the day) on Saturday. Saturdays are fun because I can practice a bar technique for an hour then do a partner workout that gets the heart pumping and muscles burning. This Saturday's bar technique was clean and jerks. My form wasn't right. My arms were like, "That bar isn't going over my head today." I was all sorts of jacked up. And then the partner workout started and I'm not sure if Coach Ruben makes these workouts and says, "That looks easy", then watches us suffer.

20 minutes as many rounds as possible

12 deadlifts

9 shoulder to overhead

6 hang squat cleans

3 devil presses

row till your partner is done then switch

That looks like nothing until you've done 3 rounds and the Coach says, "You've got 15 minutes to go." It was in that moment on the rower that I over heard Kirk talking to Coach Jason. He was telling him that when he started CrossFit, he couldn't do any of the movements. We're talking muscle ups, handstand push ups, form horrid, last to finish and more. The 5 am class he goes to has women in their 40's and 50's and they were all beating him and giving him flak for it because he's in his 20's.

My ears perked up because I'm in that boat now (except I'm not in my 20's). I've got so much to learn and if Kirk can do it, so can I. I intentionally listened to the conversation unfolding to find out the secret to his success and it wasn't motivation. Kirk believes motivation is stupid because motivation can change from day to day depending on feelings and other circumstances. What gets him through is consistency. "My mantra is to KEEP SHOWING UP!"

Looking back at tough times in my 43 years on this planet, I realize that he's right.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18—16 Rejoice always,17 pray without ceasing,18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

When my world was falling apart and I spent most of the time in my closet crying, I had no motivation yet I still read my Bible and prayed. When my heart hurt from the pain a person caused me and I felt nothing, I still kept showing up to church, part singing, mostly crying. When I had 5 days to find a place to live, I kept trusting God would provide. It was in those times and more when I realized the secret of living isn't having everything perfect. Life's like that. One moment things are going great then the next it seems like nothing can go right. The secret is to keep showing up first in my relationship with God then in everything else.

Motivation will only get me so far. Consistency will take me farther than I dreamed possible.
