The Tree, The Dream and The Fall

Imagine the biggest tree you’ve ever seen full of vegetation, branches galore and lush leaves. Birds and animals find shelter in and around this tree. Now imagine that tree cut down to a stump. Creatures scatter, the stump is covered in dew and left desolate for seven years. This was the dream King Nebuchadnezzar had (Daniel 4) and unfortunately he was the tree.

Today I heard a new term: douchebag crossfitter. A douchebag is an obnoxious, offensive and disgusting person according to Webster’s Dictionary. In the world of CrossFit, this type of individual thinks they are better than everyone else, forgetting they had humble beginnings. People who’ve helped them along the way disappear in the light of their superiority.

King Nebuchadnezzar was just that type of king. He had a successful kingdom and in 600 BC Babylon was considered the great urban center. Everyone came to enjoy its bounty yet King Nebuchadnezzar believed he was the one who built the kingdom into a super power kingdom (Daniel 4: 30).

Daniel 5:20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.

God warned him not to consider himself above anyone including God yet he didn’t listen until his kingdom was taken away and for seven years he lived among the field like an animal. One day, he came back to his senses and acknowledged God’s kingdom above his own as well as the One who can humble the proud.

No one in my Crossfit friend group is like this. Sometimes we have to remind each other that we are awesome and can do great things. But there might be someone in the gym that resembles this and 5 annoying CrossFit personalities outlined by a website called Stack.

5 Annoying Crossfit Personalities and how to avoid being one:

  1. The Show Off: These people “believe” they are the best and might show it by loudly boasting about their accomplishments, doing extra after the WOD is over or going above and beyond the RX+ weight. Instead of focusing on you, find others to boost confidence in.

2. The Gear Head: This person takes out every piece of CrossFit equipment they own for every single WOD whether they need it or not. Just take out what you need.

3. The Lone Wolf:This person walks in, tries not to make eye contact with anyone and works out alone. CrossFit is all about community. It’s ok to say hello or at least remember people’s names.

4. The Whiner: No matter what’s on the agenda for the day, they don’t want to do it and they voice it. They can’t do a box jump or their knees hurt or they’re not that strong for push presses. Choose happy! Choose to challenge yourself and see how strong and fast and cool you really are.

5. The Cheater: They can’t count, over count or round up their score. Just be honest. It’s you versus you and no one cares what score you really got.

Back to King Nebuchadnezzar and his proud heart…I’ve been there thinking I suddenly was the best when really I just got better. I end today with what the king should of done: be humble.

Proverbs 11:2 “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
