Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Branden Husky is a meat eater through and through. There is no bread in his diet! He can be heard swapping hunting stories with fellow hunters but also talking about his carnivore diet where he’s already lost 15 pounds, kept muscle and decreased body fat 6%. Just after our class on Tuesday, he was discussing all of the positives of eating meat, which might include insulin levels returning to normal which can lower blood sugar levels and reduce vitamin and mineral deficiencies. He’s not only an advocate of meat but his desire is to help people which can be shown not just in Legion of Power CrossFit, but it goes way back to his firefighting days.
In 1992 he joined the firefighting team on a volunteer basis and three years later, he made it his career. At 18 years old, he thought joining would make him more popular with the ladies, but what he didn’t understand was that God was using that to form his heart into a heart that helps people and that’s willing to serve.
1 Peter 4:10-11 - "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord."
As a firefighter, he assisted in creating a fitness program for the firefighters called Pure Fitness Training. It lasted for a couple years, and though it wasn’t a success in his eyes, it was the steps he needed to take so that way now he can be the amazing coach that he is.
When service became life and fitness became an obsession, Brendan decided to take some courses that will help him with his coaching (9 in total). One of the coaching certifications that he took was a certification that helped correct form called the Burgener Strength Level 1 and 2. This course can break down a snatch, clean and jerk into 10 movements to get an efficient technique down for the athlete. In one of my previous blogs, I talked about how he looked at my clean and knew right away what was wrong with it. Jose, one of the LPC coaches but also a member of Legion of power, describes Husky as someone who has created confidence in him just by using the snatch drills to correct his snatch form.
Husky’s favorite thing about coaching is to see people succeed. He once told me about Nicole, a LPC member, who has such great form on her cleans but was too scared to go up in weight. After he encouraged her, she ended up cleaning 115 pounds! She says that he will still go out of his way to correct the little things that need to be adjusted. “He’s so chill and wise,” says Nicole. He even gave her stretches to help with form. There are so many more stories of people’s CrossFit lives changing because they learned small things from Husky’s coaching.
Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
So, it is safe to say that Husky has chucked the bread and is doing exactly as God’s word says: serving others.
