I Corinthians 6:19-20
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Trust is something that we have to do on a regular basis. We trust our cars to get us from point A to point B just like we trust that the waste services will pick up our trash on the day they said it would be picked up. But there are times when we hold back that trust especially from God. This is what happened with my friend Jose.
He was never into CrossFit or competitions. When Jose first started CrossFit in 2019 he didn’t really like it! As a matter of fact, he had the mentality that it was everyone else against him and it wasn’t until the CrossFit Open that he got hooked (see previous blog called "CrossFit Open" February 17th). People came together to celebrate what the body can do with food, fitness and fun. That environment led him to continue his endeavors and this year, he got to go to the CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin. As a spectator, he came in timid, not really believing in himself and left the games feeling like he too can do anything. This drive propelled the next few competition events he entered including Desert City Classics.
Desert City Classics showcases all types of people from the amateur to the elite and goes for 2 days. It tests strength and endurance using a variety of tools like the dreaded wall balls and burpees to swimming and kettlebells. Training for swimming started in July and believe it or not, he didn’t know how to swim. One day a week he would practice the workouts and doubled up on WODs in the gym besides the nutrition challenge. His mindset was even different. Instead of looking at others, he focused solely on his performance. He finished first in the Pat Event and 8th overall.
Pat Event for time with 7 minute time cap
2 rounds of
42 Drag Rope Single Unders
27 Double Kettlebell deadlift at 35 pounds
12 Regular Push-ups
Here’s the kicker: he almost didn’t make it. A month before the competition, he got pneumonia which left him helpless and limited. It was during this time, he decided to trust God with his body. It’s not his body but God’s and this was an opportunity to shift his perspective that God was allowing him to do this because this body is ultimately God’s body. God became in control. Contests aren’t supposed to be easy and it wasn’t. Jose panicked in the pool when his goggles came off and the 20 pound wall ball felt like 30 pounds but what it does is allow for reflection and a knowledge of where a person is currently to where they want to go.
Jose is looking forward to his next encounter in the New Year Nightmare working on essentials like sleep, recovery and nutrition while continuing to trust that God’s got him.
