Sundays at the gym has become my favorite experience. It's chill, my friends are there and we talk afterward but I got to say it's my friend/Coach Ruben's crazy concoction of strength and endurance workouts that make it so much fun. Building muscle is exhilarating but then he goes and challenges the cardiac muscles (the heart) by adding moves that leave us huffing and puffing.
This weekend was a great example. We started off doing 18 calories on the row, bike and ski. Ran 200 meters then back for 18 repetitions of bench press, curl and press and shoulder shrugs. There were six rounds of this luckily with the repetitions decreasing by 3. My arms and legs were feeling like jello and sometimes I didn't completely slack off because I heard my friends shouting, "Come on Melinda!" or I saw the gym owner (Coach Aaron) walk by. That was motivation enough!
The heart is a very important muscle that is responsible for blood flow to your entire body. According to Medical News Today, heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Keeping the heart healthy requires aerobic exercise. The National Library of Medicine says, The stronger the heart muscles are, the more efficient they become." This is true in my spiritual walk as well.
Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
I have to be careful with what information I let in and take root but what's really scary for me is that the Bible also says, "As water reflects a face, so a man's heart reflects the man" (Proverbs 27:19). I've been noticing some things like being short tempered and weird moods I'm not normally in. Like that huffing and puffing, this tells me I need more of God. The National Library of Medicine might suggest praying, reading the Bible and going to church (aerobic exercise:). My spiritual muscle needs to be strengthen so I can become an efficient follower of Christ.
