Normally when I'm at the gym, something would remind me of a scripture I read or what I've learned about in the Bible and my faith. This week, it was the opposite. As I was reading 2nd Peter, Peter started to list characteristics that will keep one productive and effective as a Christian.
2 Peter 1:5-9
faith
goodness
knowledge
self-control
perseverance
godliness
mutual affection
love
Peter said that we should add these things to our faith. This list jogged my memory of the words that are on our gym walls. Above the front door, it says power then all around the gym are the words...
strength
stamina
flexibility
balance
accuracy
agility
cardio-respiratory endurance
coordination
Both Peter and Coach Aaron were thinking alike. To be effective and productive and dare I say successful, it requires more than just passively going through the motions. In our spiritual walk, adding on to faith is going to take more than reading some scripture and going to church once a week but spending time dissecting the word and talking to God. In challenging times, we practice what has been taught.
In the gym, it's the same way. No one can expect anything more if they show up a couple of times, throw around weight that is comfortable and do only the workouts that are fun. There's got to be the workouts that suck but you've gotten through them and grabbing for the plates or dumbbells that seem crazy to attempt yet there's more strength than you thought possible. It's giving every single thing your absolute all, leaving nothing left but an imprint of your body on the floor due to the amount of loss perspiration. Real power is having strength with stamina, speed and accuracy, flexibility with balance and coordination plus agility and cardio-respiratory endurance.
Coach has a saying on his computer that reads, "You earn your body". Only we get to decide how much we will grow in every aspect of our lives.
