Bruce Lee said it best when he said "As you think, so shall you become." Nothing can limit someone in the gym like a defeated mindset. The funny thing is that there are so many opportunities to work on the mind. Each workout of the day (WOD) is designed to challenge not just muscle but mind.
This week we had a killer upper body workout that required multiple holds for a minute followed by a minute of work. The weight required was 20 pound dumbbells and I chose 25 pounds (going for the upgrade). Holding those dumbbells by my sides for a minute was nothing. Resting them on my shoulders for a minute was doable but the mind battle really happened when I had to lift those weights overhead and keep them there for a full 60 seconds for 4 rounds!
It was after the first round of holds, things got complicated. Muscles started to fatigue and the realization of what I was holding set in. Coach Husky might of known what was going through our minds because during the second round of holds he started saying, "Don't look at the clock. Focus on keeping your shoulders down." During the third overhead hold I knew I wouldn't make it unless I started talking to myself. I began to remind myself of the truth of who I am.
I am more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37).
Greater is He that is in me than He that is in the world (1 John 4:4).
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).
When I am weak, He is strong (2 Corinthians 12:9-11).
You got this because you were made for this (Esther 4:14).
This mind sift is a substance I take with me in life. As a teacher I remind myself that I've done this multiple times and know what I'm doing. As a mom I tell myself that I am shaping future world changes. As a member of society I tell myself I add value to other's lives. Bruce Lee was right. What we think we will become so I chose what's in my mind and make sure it's helping me reach for greater in the gym and out.
