When I started Legion of Power CrossFit (LPC), I purchased a punch card. Ten visits was ideal for me due to being a middle school teacher, parent and active in my church. Workouts would be half hour long at 5 am in my home and Saturdays belonged to the gym! I love Saturdays because bar technique is taught then a 20 minute partner workout. The first time strangers walked up to me and fist bumped me after a workout was a little weird. I was used to working out alone, in silence. If anyone was going to encourage me, it was me. Not so in CrossFit. Regardless of if the workouts are partnered or solo, people are passing by with "you're doing great", "you're almost done", "breath"! It was Isaiah 41:6 coming to pass:
Each one helps his neighbor and says to his brother, "Be strong!"
This was new and contagious! It started out with me counting reps for a partner and telling her she's almost done. Then it turned to fist bumps and telling people just how amazing they are which wasn't far fetched because to me these people are rock stars! Yet they were so humble. It's become so second nature that there's not a day when I don't offer to take someone's equipment back after I clean it or tell them something that gives confidence.
In the real world this translates so beautifully with the person I want to be. I have a friend who goes through some tough times yet she's always texting me something uplifting. She's like the CrossFit fam that could of had a sucky workout but is still going around high-fiving everyone. It's contagious in the gym but now the test is to make sure I keep cheering those around me so they can be persuaded to continue to live their best life. Perhaps this new found skill will become an encouraging epidemic.
