As a coach, there are several questions I ask members during the workout. I’m not talking about the basic “Are you alright?”, “How’s the knee?” or “Do you need heavier weights?”. The questions I’m referring to are if a member knows how many repetitions was done during a specific exercise and what weight was used. I’m blown away with the number of people that tell me they have no idea. They see a weight in front of them, they pick it up and move until close to the end of the timer. But are repetitions really important to note? According to Men’s Health, it’s really not that important. But what is important is having a goal or a set of specific goals before you step into the gym.
Proverbs 29:48a KJV
Where there is no vision, the people perish:
This verse is specifically talking of spiritual guidance. If the Bible is never read, then one wouldn’t know how to live in a manner that pleases God (See the book of James;) This is true for our physical selves. In Fred C. Lunenburg’s Goal-Setting Theory of Motivation, he writes there is a correlation between goals and performances. Arnold Schwarzenegger contributes his wins in the BodyBuilding World with having a vision because it shows where to go and the goals usher that vision into reality.
Psalms 143:8 NIV
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.
Daily, I find myself asking God what He would have me do today. Don’t get me wrong. I have my tentative plans but usually after praying this prayer, He multiplies my day with added tasks He orchestrates. I realize that just like I trust God to tell me what to do, this is what a coach does. Most individuals have no idea what they should be focusing on or aiming for. A coach creates awareness for the members. For example, in the upcoming phase of F45, we are focusing on muscle endurance. The time under tension is longer and the exerciser must endure the physical activity with the same weight selection. This means they will have to mentally and physically push past all their barriers and I get to be the one to enlighten, inspire and challenge them.
Proverbs 15:22 NIV
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
