King Nebuchadnezzar is known in the book of Daniel for multiple things. He had a dream that he expected his wisemen to know without him telling them or he will kill them. He erected a statue of gold that people should bow down to and threw three jewish boys into a flame (They didn’t die! Read Daniel 3!!) and he is told of his downfall by God before his seven year hiatus from his throne. I am just like Nebuchadnezzar. No, I didn’t throw anyone into a fire but I was just as boastful.
It is no secret that I work at a gym that is not CrossFit affiliated. I love working there and can run circles around some of their programs due to tremendous cardiac and muscular endurance. It is also no surprise that I love my CrossFit family Legion of Power and boast about it any chance I get but after going to a CrossFit class at 5:30pm on a Monday, I was truly humbled.
It was an unusually quiet class as experienced CrossFitters stretched to prepare for a class filled with wall balls, clean and jerks, pull-ups and toes-to-bar. These people didn’t come to play. They came to conquer the WOD. Excitement, nerves and the feeling of wanting to pop out of my skin (no pre-workout involved) took over as I took my place in the room. This was no Saturday class at LPC. We weren’t using dumbbells. There were no tiny risers or ski erg or rower or ybells. It was the bar, weighted plates, a wallball and a pull-up bar. We’re talking cold steel baby!
Proverbs 16:18 TPT
Your boast becomes a prophecy of a future failure. The higher you lift yourself up in pride, the harder you’ll fall in disgrace.
God tried to warn Nebuchadnezzar of this failed future or fall in a series of visions or dreams he had. Daniel told him he would lose his kingdom unless he became righteous. What does Nebuchadnezzar do? Later on, he’s looking at his kingdom in all its majesty and power and says that he is the one who built it. He never acknowledges God. Oh the fall came right after he uttered those words and he was driven from his kingdom, ate grass like an animal and lost his mind!
He’s not the only one who got humble pie served on a silver platter. That Monday, I had to lower my weight to 65 pounds for the clean and jerks, use a 10 pound wall ball and don’t even get me started on my modified pull-ups and knee raises instead of toes-to-bar. Every lady there was using at least 95 pounds on the bar (including Emilia who used 125 pounds), 14 pound wallball and kipping their pull-ups while touching the bar with their toes. It was humiliating to say the least🤦🏽♀️😭.
Luckily, with God, it’s a lot easier getting out the ditch of pride. All Nebuchadnezzar had to do was look up to heaven and acknowledge the fact that he’s not all that. God is!
Daniel 4:37
Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down.
He got his kingdom and sanity back! I guess I did too. I realized that I have more to learn in CrossFit and my journey is far from going to the CrossFit games but that acknowledgement alone and knowing that I can try my best while thanking God that I can move will get me way farther than trying to pretend I’m all that and a sandbag.
